Department of Physics

The Department of Physics is one among the pioneer departments at St.Paul’s College which has developed at a breathtaking pace since its birth in 1965. With a humble beginning of just a Pre-degree course, the department grew in stature to a research centre in 1985. In a span of 20 years, the department witnessed accelerated changes- the sanction of B.Sc. course in 1967, approval of M.Sc. course in 1984 and upgradation as research centre in 1985 being some of the landmark changes that changed the face of the department.

The Department is full-fledged with a dynamic team of 8 faculty members out of which 5 are Ph.D. holders in frontier areas of Theoretical and Experimental Physics. We have a well-equipped laboratory (with a capacity that caters to the requirements of U.G. and P.G. courses) maintained by 2 technical assistants. Active research is ongoing in the areas of Theoretical High Energy Physics, Quantum Optics, Quantum Computation, Non-linear dynamics, Radiation Physics, Thin film solar cells, Nanomaterials and Optoelectronic devices. The Department is an extended research centre of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (KUFOS), Kochi. It is a matter of great pride that 4 Ph.D.’s have been produced and currently 4 scholars are working towards their Ph.D. degree in our research centre. The research centre has to its credit, more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed international journals and a filed patent. Financial assistance has been offered by BRNS and UGC for a major and minor project respectively.
