Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry became a full-fledged department with the beginning of degree course in 1999. Department offers BSc (Industrial Chemistry) and MSc (Pure Chemistry) .The degree course is a Model II B.Sc vocational course under the Choice Based Credit and Semester System of the MG University with Mathematics as complementary courses and Petrochemicals as the elective subject. This is a six semester course. The highlight of this course is that the students have to undergo on the job training in a major chemical factory for 400 hours or 50 days. During the training, they have to complete a Project Work.

The department has a 5 member faculty. Head of the Department is Dr.Rose Philo.K.J. All faculty members are actively engaged in research. Many minor projects and a major project are going on in the department.

Many university ranks are secured by the degree students and always have very good result. A good percentage of the degree students are getting admission for MSc. in various colleges on merit basis and some of them are joining for other higher studies. P.G. students are engaged in research and most of them are getting placement in various companies in and out of the state and abroad.

Department is collaborating with various companies in the locality such as F.A.C.T, K.R.L, HOCL, Binani Zinc Ltd, H.I.L, T.C.C, Arjuna Natural Extracts, Spices Board India, M.P.E.D.A, AVT McCORMIC. Carborandum Universal Ltd, Periyar Chemicals etc. to help the students to get training in their companies. The chemical factories around this locality are always in touch with the department and whenever there are vacancies they inform the department

The Department has well equipped laboratories. There is vibrant extra-curricular involvement by students. National days are celebrated by students under the guidance of the faculty. Department periodically conducts UGC sponsored national seminars, workshops and talks by eminent scholars. It also conducts chemistry lecture series every year to enhance the knowledge of students and faculty.
